The Bison is the largest land mammal in North America. A single calf is born after a 9 month gestation period, usually in April or May. The newborn weights between 25 and 40 pounds. Within the first week, a calf is able to graze and drink water. The calf stays close to the mother and after one month gravitates toward other calves in "play groups".
